The Centre’s research report – “It is not too late to care” was launched by Kevin Zibell, Chair of the Sector Working Group on Forgotten Australians and Vice President of the Board of Directors at the Centre.
This report outlines the life experiences of 77 careleavers who grew up in Victorian institutions and compares their experience to that of Australians of the same age group in the general population. Over 80 participants including over 20 careleavers attended this event. Following the launch, there was a discussion with the careleavers who attended the meeting regarding the research report and the recommendations contained in it.
This event also launched another significant project in this area led by the Alfred Felton Chair of Child and Family Welfare, Prof. Cathy Humphreys. A consortium of researchers, community organisations and DHS was successful in obtaining a grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC) to undertake a three-year research project into the role of archives as central to quality practice for current and past care leavers.
Copies of the “It is not too late to care” research report is being mailed to all member organisations to the nominated representative. If you are not the nominated representative of your organisation, but would like to receive a copy of the report please contact the Centre’s reception on 9614 1577 for a copy.

The Victorian Government has committed $1 million in 2008-09 (totaling $7.1 million over four years) to provide a new service for people who grew up in children’s homes or orphanages and foster care in the period between 1920 and the introduction of the Children and Young Persons Act in 1989. Once established, this service will offer a range of services for care leavers including, information and assistance to access other services such as housing, counseling and legal services; search services; material assistance; and support for care leavers and their families.
The Department of Human Services would like to hear the views of care leavers about how the service should be developed. It is proposing to conduct a number of focus groups in regional and metropolitan regions throughout Victoria to give care leavers the opportunity to discuss what the new service should provide to care leavers.
